Fashion

Just now, SBTB:NOW! linked to a delightful slideshow at TheGloss.com, a delightful lot of pictures about the high standard of fashion the show always had.

We are not alone.

Saved by the Bell: Brokeback Style

To no-one's surprise, other people have noticed the occasionally almost blatant Zack/Slater subtext. Some of these people made a video, which is dear and sweet and just lovely.
Watch it.You can tell those boys are really rooting (for) each other.

Zack's Birthday

Either today or yesterday (bugger timezones) Mario Lopez gave us this tweet:

Keeping in mind Slater's stint as a lifeguard at Malibu Sands Beach Club and Mario Lopez playing Greg Louganis some years ago, this tweet amuses me.
This tweet also means there should be a Malibu Sands review today. Oh, yes. And why not start at the beginning?

Plot summary

It's the first Malibu Sands episode, so a lot of it is setting the scene. The gang, sans Lisa, is spending the summer working at the beach club where Lisa's folks are members. Lisa spends the entire summer there alongside them, doing not all that much unless plot demands. Slater and Kelly are hired as lifeguards, Jessie apparently as nothing in particular initially (whu?). though her mouthiness gets her the receptionist's job, and Zack and Screech are hired as waiters. Why anyone would give Screech a job that would require extensive contact with beach club members and their food is beyond me, but then I'm not in HR.
Zack, while good at sucking up to members, doesn't seem to have learned about basic workplace diplomacy and is the least professional of the gang. His mouth gets him demoted to "social director", though with his attitude, demoting him to "not actually a member of staff" would have been a perfectly legitimate course of action.

We once more get to watch our gang interact with an Each Coast character. A moody, uppity woman with a stick up her arse.
Methinks West Coast folk have certain ideas about East Coast dwellers...
Let's see if actually sticking around for a few episodes to soak up the California sun will mellow her out, shall we?

Conversational clues

This episode has a lovely scene of the gang minus Zack (it's a surprise party) and Screech (it's a surprise party and for once the gang remembers it'll not be a surprise if you involve Screech in any way) busy organising Zack's birthday party. In this scene, which mixes conversation with looks and touches in a way that makes the order of this blog seem most pointless, we find out that Kelly and Jessie will stay at Lisa's family beach house, presumably even less supervised than they are at home since Lisa's parents are busy surgeons. Jessie refers to it as her and Kelly "moving in", which makes it sound all official and grown-up. They are very happy with this arrangement, and when Kelly expresses her gratitude, she and Lisa share a sweet hug and a sweet look that makes me wonder what exactly they have planned for their time together.

Here's a picture:

Isn't it just the sweetest?

The actual living together is not without it's problems, though.
Is it ever?
I guess they've known each-other for too long to still have that new relationship glow that makes the other party's faults, if not invisible, at least not that irritating.
The problems are that Jessie snores to the point where it wakes Kelly, something that is discussed in a way that implies they share a room at the very least, and is messy in a way that Kelly and Lisa refuse to tolerate.
Kelly, meanwhile, has a tendency to hum energising tunes while getting dressed for her early-morning runs.

Which brings me to the next point.
Kelly's athletic activities.
She's hired as a properly qualified lifeguard, she's a regular runner, and from what we've seen in the regular school year episodes, she's in all kinds of teams, including softball. She's a jock, plain and simple. Not particularly butch, but still. She may not be particularly open about it on camera, but she's basically a lesbian cheerleader avant la lettre. She has the sportiness and the attitude to grow up to be a good P.E. teacher (and, if I may say so, seems to lack the academic abilities needed to become a doctor). I remember what Clueless taught me about female P.E. teachers. They're awesome.

NB no reference is made (ever, IIRC) of the guys' sleeping arrangements. As far as I'm concerned, they're similar to that of the girls except either at the beach house of a friendly sugar daddy or at some Carosi-sponsored hovel they'd have to share with the rest of the male employees.
Well, hello sailor!

Speaking of our lads, there are a few instances in which Zack goes on about how he wants to win over Stacey. He fails in fairly spectacular ways, and every time Slater is there, gleefully rubbing it in and happy in the knowledge that he doesn't have to share Zack quite yet.

Looks

Apart from that lovely moment Lisa and Kelly shared, there's not much to find in this episode, looks-wise. The only thing is an extra behind Zack and Slater who seems to stare at Slater rather intently. He seems to harbour certain thoughts. Slater only has eyes for Zack, though. It's a tough life, being an extra...

Touches

After one of Zack's failed attempts at getting Stacey to like him, Slater puts his elbow on Zack's shoulder. Not overtly possessive, at least not before we cut to the next scene,  but still making sure to do the nearest socially acceptable thing.

Queer Gear

Nothing much, really. Damn uniforms! The closest I could think of was the pink volleyball Lisa was holding for no apparent reason, which is really just random pinkness rather than something that could be interpreted as some sort of covert statement or sign of allegiance.

Random observations of note

When Zack is busy being social director, he goes around applying sun screen to sensible young women and helping similar, or even the same young women improve their volleyball skills. During all this, he gets very close to them, physically.
Much closer than I'd expect women to let random lads get regardless of their job description.
Unless you expect them to not have certain ideas or intentions, if you consider him no potential threat, romantically/sexually speaking.
It is my strong suspicion that these women assumed Zack was gay rather than any-which-way and therefore "safe". Trust Zack to take full advantage of this.
Until Carosi puts a stop to it, that is.

Screech and his water precision made me think of the assumed-gay jocks in Heathers, but I suspect early-90s SoCal is not the same about fancy bottled water as late-80s Ohio and the water knowledge is more for the members than for himself, so it doesn't really count.

Also, if I ever celebrate my birthday in a way that involves cake, I want the cake to say "happy wrong number by the sea" and see how many people besides me would get it.

Quote of the Episode

Goon hitting on Kelly: What do you have to do to get a little mouth-to-mouth?
Kelly: Try drowning.

Way to go Kelly! Of course, this idiot actually goes and tries it out later in the episode. Turns out Kelly is a good lifeguard and she saved him before he was far enough gone to need mouth-to-mouth, so his twisted little plan failed.

Rating

8/10

Mostly because of the girls, with their living together, especially Kelly since she adds some jock to the mix.
Slater's reaction to Zack's consistent failing Stacey-wise and the bikini-clad member's ideas about Zack certainly help, but this episode belongs to the girls.

Proposition 8

Not, strictly speaking, related to Saved by the Bell, but as this is an LGBT-themed review blog and our beloved Bayside students went to school and mostly to college in California and may well still live there, we can't let this go by with a nice mention.

Proposition 8, an addition to the California state constitution to "protect"marriage by banning same-sex marriage and thereby denying same-sex couples equal rights, has been ruled unconstitutional.
A mayor victory for LGBT-rights activist, who've fought, and continue to fight hard for their rights, including the right to marry.
A toast to you all!

We are hoping that the next* Saved by the Bell movie will involve Slater marrying the long-time partner we like to think he found after he'd gotten over his schoolboy crush on Zack, who will totally be his best man. There should also be puppies.

* Yes, we do realise this is most unlikely. No, we will not stop hoping.

The Wicked Stepbrother: Part 2

I bet you were wondering how the whole thing would end, what with the previous episode ending with that ghastly cliff-hanger. Wait no longer!

Plot summary

At the end of part 1, Lisa, rather than Eric, crashed the car Belding bought for his wife and so very stupidly left with Slater for the weekend. Fixing it requires expensive parts, getting the money for those parts requires a rigged lottery scam involving cheating a friend out of his winnings, a rather clueless teacher. Keeping Belding happy involves an expert mix of technobabble and foreign-sounding mostly-nonsense. Honesty is, as always considered as a last resort.
Jessie finds out about the blackmail which makes her not want a stepbrother anymore. Eric finds out Lisa only went out with him because of a bribe which makes him so annoyed with Zack and Slater that he complicates their car-repair efforts by getting the auto shop class to take apart the entire car (and get an A in the process. Attaboy!), and then puts it back together after Jessie punches him in the face. He also decides to go back to NYC, but comes back on that decision when the gang makes nice. Except Kelly. Her we do not see all episode for reasons not explained, an absence I didn't notice until that last group scene. Vaguely distressing, that.
Anyway, it seems like the only free room at Jessie and Eric's place is part of the Saved by the Bell Bermuda triangle, because we sure as hell don't see Eric ever again. Shame. I was starting to like him.

Conversational clues

Apparently Zack has ideas that involve Screech being naked in a jar of jelly beans. He seems rather pleased with himself over that. I wonder what the censors thought of that.

Whenever Zack and Slater are having a nice bit of chat with Belding, they finish each-other's sentences in a way that suggests they're quite attuned to each other. It's amusing, them throwing random technobabble at Belding. especially Slater going camp by doing the German.* He did spend some time there after all. I'm left wondering what Slater was saying to Zack after they'd gotten rid of Belding by trying to get him to say Fahrvergnügen and  the volume of the background music got turned up. Anyone with mad lip-reading skills able to help me out?
They were at it again later in the episode when telling belding about the 1000-piece car, managing to upgrade it to unison in the end. That's knowing each-other, people!

Zack going on about Slater being their only hope had a decided Obi Wan/Princess Leia vibe to it, and Slater following that up by saying his great dimples, good teeth, and the biggest muscles in the school should be enough for his friends seems like a rather odd thing to say for a stereotypical high school boy, which I think shows that he isn't one. It also shows his vain gymbunny side.
For more on this, see the Quote of the episode.

Looks

Not only are Zack and Slater good at finishing each-other's sentences, they know to tell Screech he'll be a (rigged) winner just by looking at each-other. Aww. You just know they'd be a bit more touchy if they weren't in the middle of the only hallway.

Touches

When Zack and Slater are doing their technobabble, they're standing closer to each other than strictly necessary. Closer than the personal space of a teen boy would allow for a friend. Really, any closer, and they'd be hugging.
They're clearly comfortable sharing their personal space.

Slater, the tough jock muscle-man, doesn't hesitate at all putting his arm around Screech when he starts crying or when he has to be told that he can't keep his winnings. Macho, but not afraid to show tenderness publicly.

Speaking of hugs, Jessie wastes no time enveloping a self-hating Lisa in a hug.
And there's more from her. Episode of hugs, this one. Jessie and Eric have a pretty firm hug after they've made up. The most notable thing about this hug is the way they're a keeping a little too close to each other afterwards, looking as if they may well kiss. The way they looked at each-other before the hug seemed less than innocent as well. All somewhat iffy, seeing as they're stepsibs now. Sure, they've not grown up together so the Westermarck effect probably doesn't apply, but still. Iffy.

Cross-dressing

None.

Queer gear

Zack starts the episode wearing something with a (mock?) turtleneck. It makes him look a little more dapper and artistic than his public image befits, and with him wearing proper slacks  and being surrounded by guys in overalls, he looks like the polished well-groomed one. Once in class, he toned it down to jeans and a shirt-t-shirt combo that may have been fashionable once. Trust Zack to be able to fly under the gaydar.
Not that he's well-groomed to the point of fatuity. When necessary, he's perfectly prepared to don overalls, not worried about getting his hands dirty. Or at least less worried about getting his hands dirty than getting in trouble with Belding.

Screech doesn't bother with his rainbow suspenders this time, which is a pity. However, his waistcoat has some badges that appear to have some kind of message. It's not legible, so we can't say if it's queer gear or not. We can spot him wearing pinkish shoes, though. I'm pretty sure that "guys wearing pink" thing wasn't happening yet in the early 90s, so that can be counted among Screech's bold statements.

Random observations of note

In the first part of this two-parter, we had Screech mentioning the bushes in a way that could be interpreted as an acquaintance with the somewhat covert park-based cruising some men engage in. This episode, we have four guys in the bathroom, and I can't help thinking of cottaging. Quite risqué doing it in school, but then Bayside High seems to take up most of Bayside, especially if you consider The Max is on Bayside High land, and they have to get their kicks somewhere.

A little more background, but in the auto shop class, we can clearly see one of the nerd girls, fairly short-haired and wearing overalls like the rest of the class.
Traditionally a pretty butch hobby, car repair.

I really prefer to  not think of this as subtext because Mr Sachs seems like a decent man, but him saying "lets see who can stump me today, eh?" comes across as totally getting crap past the radar to me. Possibly related to my love for Adam Hills. **

Quote of the Episode

Two this episode.

Quote the first:
Jessie: "You are a selfish, inconsiderate excuse for a human being. if I was a guy, I'd punch you out."
Eric: "Too bad you're just a chick."
Jessie: "Just a chick? JUST A CHICK?" :punches Eric in the face:

Well, if he's going to be her stepbrother, he's going to find out sooner or later. Even if he's living in the Saved by the Bell Bermuda triangle.

Quote the second:
Zack: But Slater, we were counting on you. I mean, you are our only hope.
Slater: "Look, I don't need this pressure. I'm the captain of the wrestling team and the football team, I've got great dimples, great teeth and and the biggest muscles in school. Come on, isn't that enough for my friends?"

Mixing CampGay and HardGay traits in one sentence. Bravo Slater!
It gets extra point for making me think of Star Wars, though in all honestly I doubt it was set up as a subtle reference. Apart from anything, Kevin was nowhere to be seen.

Rating

6/10
I had expected this episode to be slim pickings again like the first part of this set, but with multiple clues that Zack and Slater's friendship might well be a little more special than they care to publicly acknowledge, Screech wearing pink shoes, Zack knowing what to do with jelly beans, and Jessie letting her stepbrother know about being transgender in her own special and awesome way, this episode had more queer content than I remembered.
